The same rules about which verbs take avoir and which take être and about the agreement of the past participle apply to plus-que-parfait.

The negation is formed by placing ne ... pas around the auxiliary. e.g. Je n'avais pas pris mon déjeuner. [I had not taken my breakfast.] Je n'étais pas allé [I had not gone.]

Plus-que-parfait is used to describe something that had already happened before something else occured or before a fixed point of time. In English the plus-que-parfait is indicated by

had + past participle

e.g.

Elle était déjà partie quand je suis arrivé. [She had already left, when I arrived.]

Quand mon ami est arrivé, j'avais déjà fini mon travail. [When my friend arrived, I had already finished my work.]

e.g.

Si seulement tu avais fini ton travail. [If only you had finished your work.]

Sentences which contain two parts, one of which is a si clause, normally follow one of the following patterns:

si + présent + futur

si + imparfait + conditionnel présent

si + plu-que-parfait + conditionnel passé

e.g.

S'il pleut demain, je resterai à la maison. [If it rains tomorrow, I'll stay at home.]

Si javais de l'argent, j'irais en France. [If I had the money, I would go to France.]

Si tu m'avais téléphoné plus tôt, j'aurais pu venir. [If you had phoned me earlier, I could have come.]
